About the Institute and FCP

Hawai‘i lawmakers unanimously passed HCR56 in 2022 which requested the Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE) to “implement a Filipino history, culture and identity social studies course for high school students.” The Filipino Curriculum Project (FCP), a group of Filipino & Filipino American students in Hawaii dreamed of this curriculum after learning that they are not represented enough in existing social studies courses. Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, the following HIDOE and Hawaii Private Schools will offer CHR 2300 Filipino History Culture: Farrington High School, Waipahu High School, Dreamhouse Charter School, and Maryknoll School.

The Filipino American Education Institute is named after Sistan C. Alhambra, the first Filipina teacher hired at a Hawai‘i public school in 1924 who later developed Hawai‘i’s first private Kindergarten school. In memory of her trailblazing spirit, the mission of the Institute is to connect the knowledge and resources of the nation’s leading scholars in Philippine and Filipino American studies, languages, literature, curriculum and pedagogy with the expertise of K-12 teachers to ultimately benefit all students in Hawaiʻi.

Professional Development

The courses will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis with preference given to 1) high school social studies teachers of CHR 2300 Filipino History Culture and/or 2) participants who register for the two-part series. This PD series will enable educators to teach the HIDOE social studies course Filipino History Culture (CHR2300). Participants must attend all scheduled professional development dates.
